When considering which surgical procedure may be best suited for you, consider how each will impact your body and lifestyle. You should also think about what you will need to do to maximize the opportunity to take control of your weight and health. When considering your choices, it may be helpful to weigh the pros and cons of each procedure before deciding which surgery may best fit your goals. The path to success begins with understanding your options.
Bariatric surgical procedures are performed to decrease the size of the stomach and aide in weight loss. Weight loss surgeries are divided into two types of procedures:
Gastric Bypass procedure In this procedure, a small stomach pouch is created. The small intestine is reconnected to the new, small stomach pouch. How this procedure works In addition to restricting food intake, the gastric bypass reduces nutrient absorption, which is referred to as malabsorption component. The bypass procedure affects hormones that control hunger and diabetes. Weight loss goals This procedure provides immediate portion control restrictions along with malabsorption and leads to weight loss of up to 70-75% of excess body weight.
The Lap-Band procedure This procedure utilizes an adjustable band that is placed around the top of the stomach, creating a small pouch. A small port is also placed inside the body which allows the band to be adjusted. How this procedure works The band limits the amount of food that can be ingested and allows an earlier sense of satiety or fullness. Weight loss goals Weight loss is slower than alternative procedures. But with appropriate follow-up care and routine band adjustments, this procedure is an effective tool for weight loss. On average a Lap-Band with good patient compliance can produce weight loss results of up to 50-55% loss of excess body weight.
If you are overweight and have been unable to lose weight with diet and exercise, weight loss surgery might be the right choice for you.
Our team is here to support you every step of the way during your journey to a healthier and happy you.
