EBUS is a breakthrough procedure being used at Bristol Health to more effectively diagnose different types of lung disorders, including cancer.
These ultrasounds are performed solely by a pulmonologist using flexible tubing with a microscopic camera at the end that is carefully guided through your mouth and into your windpipe and lungs. The device is able to take images of your lungs as well as close-by lymph nodes, giving your doctor the ability to take a closer look at your condition.
What to Expect
Your physician might obtain blood work prior to your procedure, and the evening before, you will be asked to not eat or drink after midnight. Depending on when the procedure is scheduled. When you arrive for the procedure, medications will be administered through an IV. These medications will keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. When ready, your doctor will then begin the procedure.
Using the camera and the ultrasound, your doctor will examine and collect samples from your lung. You may experience a mild cough and a sore throat, but both will usually go a
way a day later.
EBUS bronchoscopy is an outpatient procedure. You will be asked to have someone drive you home from the procedure.
Understanding the Results
The samples your doctor collected will be sent to be examined for evidence of infection, inflammation or cancer, depending on why you are having the procedure.
It generally takes 3 to 5 days to receive your results.
