June is National Cancer Survivors Month

By Samantha Aldridge, LCSW

A cancer diagnosis is never the message a person wants to receive from their doctor. Once upon a time, hearing this news meant that there was little help for the patient and family. Now, although the news of a cancer diagnosis is no easier to hear, many people of all ages can rest a bit in the fact that there is treatment, help and hope. So much so that millions of individuals and families get to hear the word "remission" after completing their treatment. Every day, so many more win their battle against cancer because of the improvements in treatment, help and hope. This is what the month of June represents for all the lives around the world as it is National Cancer Survivors Month.

During National Cancer Survivors Month, individuals and families are able to share in the common challenges of a cancer diagnosis but also in the resilience of being a survivor. The month of June is a platform for those who wish to bring awareness to others by advocating for improvements in health, accessibility to funds for patients and families, promoting health screenings, donating to an organization or sharing a personal story. National Cancer Survivors Month is also a time for survivors to let the world know they did not shrink in the turmoil a cancer diagnosis brought upon them. They are still here, and cancer did not win.

  • Pause and get still for just a second or two.
  • Breathe in "I am still here."
  • Breathe out "Cancer did not win."

This month, recognize a survivor or maybe have a more personal celebration. However you do it, please celebrate and find joy in the life that is now. Many walk around everyday with silent testimonies about their cancer diagnosis and healing. As time passes, such a tremendous feat can get lost in everyday life. This is not to say that a person becomes their diagnosis, but it certainly leaves a lasting impact. Although a cancer diagnosis may be common, it is nowhere near ordinary and should not be treated as such.

Every day, Bristol Hospital’s Cancer Care Center and Beekley Center for Breast Health & Wellness partner with individuals and families in each stage of treatment. We are with you every step of the way and strive to be a comfort during the low times and cheer at each milestone. Bristol Hospital’s Cancer Care Center and Beekley Center thank the community for trusting us to provide care and assist in restoring hope and life
